Shadow Forms

Shadow Forms Series

Trying to work even more minimally than my last series, and reduce complication and ‘noise’ - using just one dark and one light tone . . . but I ended up needing to add colour once again. These little flashes of colour reward closer inspection and add a spark of life to the shadows.

With such minimal pieces every decision has to be considered and deliberate, I can’t hide clunky decisions behind bolder strokes or colours. Simplicity is pretty time consuming, even if it might appear effortless. Maybe the term ‘less is more’ actually means that an appearance of ‘less’ takes ‘more’ (time/effort)?!!

I see these paintings as inferring spaces or volumes, by representing shadows only. Like the shadows cast by buildings and objects, but in a way that doesn’t make sense - in the way that a memory can be incomplete or inaccurate.

The photographs above show a selection of the images I’ve taken that have served as inspiration for my paintings and explorations. I find that I tend to notice shadows and the shapes that they create, almost more than the objects that create them. Most people see these but don’t consciously register them, so I’m hoping that these paintings will spark some feeling of familiarity even if people can’t really make out what they represent.

All of these paintings are on linen, with lovely German aluminium frames in a nickel finish. They are ready to hang and each one comes with a certificate of authenticity.
